Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the medical use of oxygen in a pressurized environment, at a level higher than 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA). Increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve and saturate more effectively in the blood system, primarily the plasma, which yields a broad array of positive physiological, biochemical and cellular effects. This non-invasive therapy is the most trusted way to increase oxygen levels to all organs of the body. Typical treatments last for 20-60 minutes, during which the recipient lies down and breathes normally.

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT)

mHBOT is a simple procedure that consists of entering a soft-sided hyperbaric chamber and experiencing a 30% increase in pressure, equaling 1.3 atmospheres or 10 feet below sea level. This is the highest pressure approved by the FDA for soft-sided chambers and allows for an exceptionally safe increase in tissue oxygen levels. Studies have shown a 50% increase, or more, in plasma oxygenation after one hour of treatment in a 1.3 atmosphere environment with compressed room air only.

Typical Application

The typical application that has demonstrated clinical efficacy and safety is 60-minute sessions once or twice per day, 5 days a week. Recent clinical trials parallel the protocol of 40 hours of therapy within a 30-day period. Sensitive individuals may need to start at an even lower pressure with a shorter duration and progress slowly.

Is it safe?

HBOT is exceptionally safe, particularly when applied at lower pressures and following proper guidelines. Note that oxygen toxicity and adverse reactions are rare and pertain more towards clinical applications in hospital settings, where dosages are higher to treat acute and life-threatening conditions. When applied at lower dosages, safety records are impeccable.

Who might benefit?

Those suffering from chronic Lyme disease and tick-borne illness, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, autoimmune conditions, autism, cancer, and other chronic, complex, difficult-to-treat conditions. Athletes utilize HBOT for sports performance enhancement. HBOT is critical following concussion/traumatic brain injury, which is reaching epidemic levels in the United States. Hyperbaric for head injury is best utilized within days to weeks of the injury, but also provides significant benefits months to years post-incident. HBOT stimulates angiogenesis and is utilized to help treat and prevent circulatory diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and vascular-related wounds.

See below for info on HBOT and athletic performance enhancement and HBOT and stroke recovery:

  • HBOT kills pathogens

  • HBOT balances the immune system

  • HBOT lowers blood sugar levels and hemoglobin A1C by increasing cellular sensitivity to insulin and skeletal muscle reception of glucose; lipid profiles also improve

  • Cancer cannot thrive in oxygen-rich environments such as that induced by HBOT

  • Anyone with a neurologic condition (post-stroke, concussion/traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cerebral palsy, autism, attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity, migraines and depression)

  • HBOT stimulates neurogenesis, promotes neuroplasticity and improves memory and reaction time

  • Those looking to optimize their current state of health

  • Age-related diseases and degenerative maladies are a growing concern. HBOT has been shown to help prevent and combat degenerative conditions by contributing to the regeneration of blood vessels and tissues. HBOT stimulates the generation of adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), the main source of energy in our bodies, thus enhancing energy. It promotes stem cell proliferation and mobilization, decreases risk of infections, reduces stress and anxiety and supports the immune system

  • Athletes looking to enhance performance and heal better and more quickly from injuries (studies show that fractures heal in half the time with HBOT versus without)

  • Anyone hoping to heal more quickly from an acute infection, injury or surgery (in China, they have hyperbaric surgical suites, as the evidence is so strong that people heal more quickly when HBOT is used as part of the surgical and post-op plan)

There are only 3 reasons one should not do HBOT. (and for women, pregnancy is a contraindication). Let us know if you have any one of the following:

  • Current chest tube or any history of collapsed lung (pneumothorax)

  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Difficulty equalizing your ears (for instance when you fly in a plane) – there are things we can do to improve this situation

HBOT Home Rental Program

One of the fastest ways to get results is to use the HBOT daily or twice daily (with a minimum of 4 hours between sessions) over a period of 1-2 months. An in-home unit will set you up for success.

HBOT Physician Order Required

HBOT, including mild HBOT, requires a signed order from a physician or advanced practice provider/APP (nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant). Options to obtain clearance include:

  • Ask your health care provider for an order

  • See a faculty physician or APP at Aurora Wiselives Center for Wellbeing

  • Request a 10-minute HBOT Clearance Consult with Dr. Kristen Reynolds, MD for $49. Dr. Reynolds typically sees patients for clearance consults on Fridays at Golden Rey Energy Center.
